Minnesota Timberwolves Forward Ryan Gomes to Host Inaugural Hoops for Heart Health Golf Tournament

WATERBURY, CT (May 20, 2008) – Minnesota Timberwolves forward Ryan Gomes will host the inaugural Hoops for Heart Health Golf Outing on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at Southington Country Club in Southington, Connecticut. The outing will feature a double shot gun start with tee times at 8:30 am and 1 pm.

Hoops for Heart Health is a non-profit organization created by NBA player Ryan Gomes to address the problem of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in high school, college and professional sports. The mission is to first educate student-athletes and administrators about SCA, then to support testing and placement of medical devices such as Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in public facilities such as recreation centers, gymnasiums and schools. During the 2007-08 NBA season, Hoops for Heart Health partnered with Cardiac Science Corporation to create the “Let the Beat Go On…” Awareness Tour. Together, Hoops for Heart Health and Cardiac Science donated 13 AEDs in various cities around the NBA. Gomes plans to continue the donations to the remainder of the NBA cities during the 2008-09 season, as well as to work with Division I college basketball programs to encourage them to have a working AED on site at all practices and games, along with appropriate personnel trained to operate the device.

“I am pleased to host my inaugural golf outing to raise money for Hoops for Heart Health,” said Gomes. “Our donations this past season in various NBA cities allowed us to raise awareness on the serious issue of Sudden Cardiac Arrest and the importance of AED placement, and I look forward to continuing this important mission through both the NBA and collegiate basketball.”

The festivities will tip off with a Hall of Fame Dinner on Monday, June 16 at The Aqua Turf Club in Southington, CT. Guests will enjoy dinner and mingle with several notable celebrities, including Gomes, University of Florida men’s basketball head coach Billy Donovan, and others scheduled to attend. The following morning, everyone will take to the links to enjoy a round of golf at the beautiful Southington Country Club. Golfers will enjoy an 18-hole, par 71 course, featuring a front nine built on a hilly open terrain, and a narrower, flatter back nine.

Tickets are still available for the Hall of Fame Dinner at the price of $75 per person. Golf slots are also still available, at a cost of $200 per round. Sponsorship opportunities are also still available for both the Hall of Fame Dinner and Golf Outing.
