Minnesota Timberwolves’ Ryan Gomes, Parent Heart Watch and Cardiac Science Corporation announce Multi-City AED Donation
Wolves forward to present Powerheart® AEDs in various NBA cities During 2007-08 season as part of the “Let the Beat Go On…” Awareness Tour
Minneapolis, MN (November 2, 2007) – Minnesota Timberwolves forward Ryan Gomes, Parent Heart Watch and Cardiac Science Corporation (Nasdaq:CSCX) have announced today that they will be donating 12 Cardiac Science Powerheart® Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in various cities throughout the 2007-08 NBA season. The donations, made to local schools, athletic facilities and recreations centers, will take place in conjunction with Gomes and the Timberwolves’ visit to each town to play the local NBA team.
“I am looking forward to using this as an opportunity to raise awareness among NBA fans about Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) and the need for AEDs,” said Gomes. “I would like to thank Cardiac Science for joining Hoops for Heart Health and Parent Heart Watch as a partner in the ‘Let the Beat Go On…’ Awareness Tour. Hopefully this initiative will allow us to provide AEDs and proper usage training to facilities that need them across the country.” Gomes, Parent Heart Watch and Cardiac Science will donate a Powerheart AED to a local recreation center/athletic facility in Minneapolis during the course of the season at a date to be determined. Other donations will be made when the Wolves visit New York to play the Knicks on Nov. 4; in Los Angeles when they face the Lakers on Nov. 9; and in Dallas when they play the Mavericks on Nov. 28. In December, donations will be made when the Wolves visit the Atlanta Hawks on Dec. 6; the Washington Wizards on Dec. 11; the Philadelphia 76ers on Dec. 12 and the New Orleans Hornets on Dec. 22. Additional AED donations will be made when Gomes and the Timberwolves visit Cleveland (Feb. 29); Portland (March 15); Orlando (April 11) and Memphis (April 12).
Gomes’ non-profit organization, Hoops for Heart Health, announced a partnership with Parent Heart Watch in July 2007. Parent Heart Watch is a state-by-state network of parents dedicated to reducing the often disastrous effects of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in children. The organization was founded by parents who have either lost a child to SCA or whose child is at known risk for SCA. The organizations share the common goal of raising awareness about SCA, with Gomes serving as the national spokesman for both organizations. In their first joint initiative, the two organizations donated AEDs to the Health Careers Academy, a public high school located in Boston; and to Stonehill College in Easton, MA, where Gomes hosted a basketball camp for local children.
“Parent Heart Watch is proud to partner with Ryan Gomes and Cardiac Science on this initiative,” said Moyer. “We are excited to reach out to the various NBA communities and donate AEDs to those in need. We also look forward to educating fans on the dangers of SCA and the importance of AEDs and proper usage through our ‘Let the Beat Go On...’ Awareness Tour.” (continued) Page 2 – Gomes, Parent Heart Watch and Cardiac Science Corporation announce multi-city AED donation Cardiac Science’s Powerheart brand AEDs provide reliable and safe cardiac monitoring and defibrillation therapy, and are designed to be the easiest to use AED available on the market. These factors ensure that if a sudden cardiac arrest occurs, the Powerheart AED will be ready to deliver life-saving therapy regardless of the skill of the caregiver.
“Ryan Gomes’ efforts to raise awareness of SCA are truly admirable,” said Tony Titus, vice president of marketing, Cardiac Science. “The first four minutes after a cardiac arrest are critical to survival, and a shock to the heart from an external defibrillator is the only effective treatment. The ‘Let the Beat Go On…’ Awareness Tour is an excellent program to spread awareness about the importance of having publicly accessible, user-friendly AEDs in athletic facilities, recreation centers and schools so everyone has a chance to survive these sudden, unpredictable events, whenever and wherever they occur.”
